Generally speaking, pickup truck owners tend to be loyal to a specific brand or model. Ford fans love to criticize GM or RAM trucks, and vice versa. However, if there's one truck that commands respect across the board, it's the Toyota Tacoma. Reliable, rugged, and durable, it has proven itself in every category that matters. It may not be perfect, but the Toyota Tacoma remains the benchmark in its segment.

Without any major changes, the 2025 Toyota Tacoma still benefits from several small updates. The TRD Pro lineup gets a new exclusive color called Mudbath. The multimedia system has been updated, and some option packages have been enhanced.

Lineup and Pricing

If you like having plenty of choices, the Toyota Tacoma won't disappoint, offering no fewer than twelve different configurations. It all starts with the SR5 model, which has a base price of $48,170 before destination and delivery fees. The final bill comes to $51,835. One nice thing about the Tacoma is that the price increases progressively from one version to the next. However, if you're bold enough to go all the way, the Hybrid i-Force MAX Trailhunter version awaits you, starting at $88,254 before options. That said, this version is well worth its weight in gold—just like all the others, in my opinion.

Segment and Competition

Competition has ramped up in the midsize truck segment over the past few years, but the Japanese automaker has made a significant effort to stay on top. Contrary to popular belief, the Toyota Tacoma doesn't rely solely on its reputation. It's a truly competitive model with real features to offer.

Rivals: Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier

Design and Technology

Toyota has done an excellent job giving the Tacoma a timeless look while still evolving it. The current generation is very attractive, with a design that's both serious and rugged. The Japanese automaker offers a great selection of colors, and the TRD versions feature styling that's more exciting than average. The Trailhunter version's design is simply breathtaking.

The interior of the 2025 Toyota Tacoma is fairly simple in terms of layout, but that's exactly what makes it appealing. Depending on the version, you get either an 8- or 14-inch touchscreen. The seats are very comfortable, and the Tacoma's cabin remains spacious despite its size.

Some Tacoma trims offer a removable Bluetooth speaker you can take with you, so you can continue enjoying your music once you've reached your destination. In my opinion, this kind of feature should be standard in every off-road-oriented vehicle. The driver-assistance technologies are effective without being intrusive.

Performance

The 2025 Toyota Tacoma offers two powertrain options, starting with a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It produces 270 or 278 horsepower and 310 or 317 lb-ft of torque, depending on the transmission. That's right—the Tacoma is still available with a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The second engine option is the new i-Force MAX powertrain, which pairs the same 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with an electric motor for a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. This version is only available with the 8-speed automatic. Regardless of which version or powertrain you choose, the 2025 Tacoma comes standard with 4x4.

Weak Points

It's not the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the industry—even in hybrid form.

Strong Points

It's a rugged, stylish vehicle packed with modern tech. The Toyota Tacoma maintains excellent resale value and remains one of the most reliable and long-lasting models in the industry.

Signature Element

The Tacoma's signature element is undoubtedly its reputation—it's a true legend on four wheels.

Final Word

The Toyota Tacoma is the benchmark in the midsize truck category. It's a model that meets the daily needs of most drivers and is ideal for modern adventurers. Its off-road capabilities are truly phenomenal.
