The biggest criticism of Toyota’s performance models is that they aren't really Toyota-made. The Supra shares many components with the BMW Z4, and the 86 is practically a copy of the Subaru BRZ. However, it seems the Japanese automaker has listened to its customers, as the 86 might soon receive a new, 100% Toyota powertrain.
The Heart of the GR Corolla
Currently, the Toyota GR 86 uses the Subaru BRZ’s powertrain—a 2.4-liter flat-four engine with 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
Rumors about a major mechanical change for the GR 86 have started circulating online. It appears the GR 86 may soon be fitted with the GR Corolla’s engine, a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder delivering 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.
Such an engine would offer tremendous potential under the hood of the GR 86. For now, little is known on the subject, but it seems likely that the GR 86 will completely drop the 2.4-liter engine, while the BRZ will not adopt the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine.
Thus, the two cars would finally offer notable differences, as currently, aside from a few aesthetic details and technical features, the two are nearly identical.
With such a powertrain, I genuinely believe the GR 86 would grow even more popular. In fact, Toyota could make it the best small sports car on the market. Now, we just have to wait and see if this rumor becomes a reality over time—which we certainly hope will happen.
