It feels like the fifth-generation Supra has only just arrived on the market, but the legendary Japanese sports car is getting ready to leave us. Time certainly flies, as the current generation first hit dealerships in 2019.

Earlier this year, Toyota announced the launch of a final edition for the Supra, officially marking the model’s retirement. We now know that production will end next March.

An Exemplary Career

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past twenty years, you undoubtedly know the Toyota Supra — a car made famous by the Fast & Furious franchise. Car enthusiasts and tuners alike flocked to the fourth-generation platform, unlocking its enormous potential and cementing the Supra’s larger-than-life status. Expectations were therefore very high for the fifth generation, and I believe Toyota delivered a car worthy of those expectations.

The Japanese automaker ended a 17-year absence with a new-generation Supra. While many criticized Toyota for using several components from the BMW Z4, this collaboration allowed them to create a Supra true to its roots, with a powerful inline-six engine. Initially, the car was offered only with an automatic transmission, but due to strong demand, a manual gearbox was later added. This fifth-generation Supra is likely to leave a significant void and is certainly a car that defined its era.

What’s Next

For now, nothing official has been announced regarding a potential successor to the Supra. Nevertheless, given the success of the fifth generation and the growing importance of performance in Toyota’s lineup in recent years, we can almost certainly expect a new Supra to hit dealerships in the coming years.
